Hammer toe reconstruction is an orthoapedic surgery to correct a deformity of the toes, usually the second, third or fourth toe. Hammer toe correction involves a short surgical procedure removing the bony bump from the toe joint, making the toe straighter and easing pain and discomfort caused by the raised toe rubbing against the shoe.

How does it work

FREE EVALUATION OF YOUR FINDINGS

After initial contact via phone or email, we will ask you to provide us with your finding (RTG, SONO or MRI scan), with a brief description of what your goals are for the procedure. This is only used to ensure the best evaluation for your personal needs, and all information sent to us will be held in strict confidence. Of course you are under no obligation at this stage, and the evaluation is completely free of charge.

QUESTIONNAIRE

Next, we will ask you to fill in our questionnaire, as we need to be confident that there are no existing medical conditions which could affect you undergoing the procedure. Please fill in as much information as possible, and we will get back to you with an evaluation of your questionnaire by one of our doctors.

DEPOSIT PAYMENT

Once an agreement has been made for the proposed dates, prices, and surgeon who will perform the procedure, the next step will be to pay the deposit to the clinic account. The deposit is a 100% booking guarantee of your date. If you do not show up for the surgery without providing us with a reason, we cannot return the deposit back. Of course in the event that you are ill or if an emergency prevents you from keeping your date and you are able to notify us in a timely manner, we are able to find new dates for you and use this deposit to secure a new date. The outstanding balance must be paid on the day of the surgery (we accept cash, credit cards, or a direct bank transfer into clinic account).

HAMMER TOE PROCEDURE

So called hammer toe reconstruction is surgery to correct a deformity of the toes, usually the second, third or fourth toe. A bend or kink at the middle joint of one of these, which are normally straight, makes the toe stick up like a claw or hammer.  Sometimes a blister can form over the joint which can become inflamed, or callus (hard skin) or bunions form on the joint at the end of the toe. Hammer toe correction involves a short surgical procedure removing the bony bump from the toe joint, making the toe straighter and easing pain and discomfort caused by the raised toe rubbing against the shoe.

Hammer toe correction is an out-patient procedure carried out under local or general anaesthetic. The particular steps depend on whether your hammer toe is flexible or fixed. If the toe is still flexible your surgeon may use tenotomy, which is less invasive, and involves transferring the tendons from the bottom of the toe to the top to help straighten the joint. If your hammer toe is fixed (immovable) the surgeon may remove the rigid joint by making an incision at the top of the toe and shortening the end of the bone at the joint. Fusion, in which the ligaments and tendons, along with the ends of the bone at the joint are shortened, is an alternative.

POST PROCEDURE CARE

You can usually return home on the same day as the procedure, assuming you can stand and walk without any problems. Some clinics provide a special open-toed, hard-soled shoe to be worn at home, to save pressure on the toes as they heal, and over-the-counter painkillers will also be prescribed. Depending on the type of hammer toe correction you’ve had, complete recovery can take up to six weeks. Stitches will generally be removed 10 to 15 days after surgery along with any pins or wires used in the procedure.  Hammer toe can be caused by ill-fitting shoes, so it’s essential to ensure you wear shoes with enough ‘wriggle room’ for your toes. High heels should also be avoided.
